Jazz is bad news

In het kader van Leuven Jazz verplaatst Radio Scorpio zich drie dagen naar de Bib in Leuven, het resultaat is 100 & JAZZ FM: live- en dj-sets met jazz in de breedste zin. 
Lumière is alles behalve gespecialiseerd in jazz, maar waarom niet eens een blog over jazz in films? 

Als we kijken naar de geschiedenis van jazz in films kom je gemakkelijk tot de conclusie "jazz is bad news". Drugs, criminaliteit, grootstedelijke verval, en  ... jazz.  
 Laten we eens een korte vogelvlucht nemen. 

Een van de eerste films die expliciet verwijst naar jazz in haar titel is The Jazz Singer (Alan Crosland, 1927). In de film hoor je voor het eerst Al Jolson mooi gesynchroniseerd met de beelden een aantal zogenaamde jazz-liedjes zingen, zoals bijvoorbeeld "Blue Skies" (Irving Berlin). Vaak wordt naar deze film verwezen als de eerste geluidsfilm, maar het gaat in wezen om maar een paar korte gesynchroniseerde scenes. Voor de rest zijn we aangewezen op intertitles. Wat je hoort is eerder populaire muziek dan jazz, luister en kijk maar eens: 

Anderzijds zijn er tussen populaire muziek en jazz, zeker in de jaren '20, '30 en '40, sterke banden. George Gershwin basseerde zich voor zijn opera-musicals vaak op Afro-Amerikaanse muziek (Porgy and Bess, Blue Moon) of denk maar aan zijn Rhapsody in Blue. Dit soort muziek vondt zijn weg ook naar de cinema, door bijvoorbeeld een van de weinige autochtone filmcomponisten uit het eerste uur van de Gouden Eeuw van de filmmuziek: Alfred Newman. Hij leerde als musical-dirigent op Broadway de muziek van Geshwin goed kennen. Dat hoor je ook in zijn score voor Street Scene (King Vidor, 1931), Rhapsody in Blue maar op film zeg maar. 
Meer dan tien jaar later vinden we David Raskin's score van Laura (Otto Preminger, 1944) terug. Onder het motto "I Don't want it good, I want it on Monday", schreef Raskin een liefdesthema op een week de tijd. Oorspronkelijk wou  regisseur Otto Preminger "Sophisticated Lady" van Duke Ellingston voor de sountrack gebruiken, maar Alfred Newman - op dat moment music director bij Fox - overtuigde Preminger ervan om Newman een kans te geven. En zo geschiedde: het liefdesthema dat Raskin schreef is de geschiedenis van de jazz ingegaan als een standard. Het zelfde geld voor heel wat latere scores. Denk hierbij maar aan Days of Wine and Roses (1962) met muziek van Henry Mancini.
Zelfs in Japan vindt de jazz zijn weg naar het grote scherm. Een van de grondleggers van de Japanse filmmuziek, Fumio Hayasaka gebruikte de jazz om Amerika te parodieëren in zijn Drunken Angel (Akira Kurosawa, 1948). Een alcoholische dokter, prostituees en vooral een gangsterfiguur die zich niet alleen vestimentair aansluit bij zijn Amerikaanse soortgenoten, hij gedraagt zich ook als een Amerikaan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwqzBTTn-Uo&feature=endscreen&NR=1. 


In de jaren 50 beginnen de eerste "echte" jazz scores op te duiken in Hollywood. Alex North's score voor A Streetcar Named Desire (Elia Kazan, 1951) wordt vaak aangeduid als de eerste in het rijtje waar ook Elmer Bernstein's scores voor The Man with the Golden Arm (Otto Preminger, 1951) en Sweet Smell of Succes (1957). Het plaatje dat in deze films geschept wordt is - net zoals in Drunken Angel - niet bepaald mooi: drugs (marihuana, heroïne), verkrachting, criminaliteit, ... . Ouders die hun kinderen niet naar de (groot)stad durven sturen hebben misschien wel een trauma opgelopen aan deze films. En je zou voor minder, Frank Sinatra aan de heroïne: 

Ook Henry Mancini behoorde tot de groep filmcomponisten die braken met de overdreven dramatische scores van hun voorgangers uit de jaren '30 en '40. De thematiek van The Pink Panther (1963) is beduidend lichter, maar de criminaliteit roept weer om een jazzy score.Iedereen kent natuurlijk de muziek die Mancini voor deze film schreef. Gelukkig schreef Mancini ook muziek voor zwaarwichtigere criminele films, zoals zijn score voor de film noir Touch of Evil (Orson Welles, 1958). Geen roze panter, maar moord, ontvoering en corruptie (oef!).  
Ook Bernard Herrmann - bekend van zijn samenwerkingen met Hitchcock - heeft de combinatie jazz, hoertjes, drank, drugs, criminaliteit en grootstedelijk verval goed begrepen. Met Taxi Driver (Martin Scorcese, 1976) schrijft hij zijn laatste score en schept hij een muzikaal portret van het nachtelijke leven in New York: hoertjes, drank, ...


Ook in de Franse nouvelle vague cinéma is de combinatie stad, criminaliteit en jazz een "match made in heaven". Jean-Luc Godard's À bout de souffle (1961) schetst een iets ander soort crimineel, maar het is toch weer maar een crimineel. Martial Solal schreef de muziek die Jean Belmondo begeleid in zijn chaotische parcours. 
Hoewel de plot in L'ascenseur à l'echefaud (Louis Malle, 1958) zich ontspint vanuit een mislukte overal, is het niet alleen criminaliteit, grootstad,  ... + jazz. De algemene toon van de muziek (veel meer cool dan hot) heeft iets klagelijk, neem nu bijvoorbeeld deze iconisch geworden scene: 




Niet alleen is de toon van de score anders, ze kwam ook op een een heel andere manier tot stand. In plaats van te stressen om deadlines zoals in de Hollywood-studios gebruikelijk is (Hollywood-veteraan Max Steiner nam Benzendrine tijdens het schrijven van Gone with the Wind  om wakker te blijven en Alex North werd naar het ziekenhuis gebracht tijdens het schrijven van zijn score voor 2001: A Space Oddysey), improviseerde Miles Davis de muziek en dat maakt het eigenlijk een jazz-score pur sang.

Alles samen genomen betekent jazz dus slechts nieuws? De laatste jaren zijn er gelukkig ook een aantal films die jazz niet noodzakelijk in een negatief daglicht stellen. Mo' Better Blues (Spike Lee, 1990) toont de jazz-muzikant eigenlijk eerder een held dan een nozem of druggebruiker persé. Deze filmt leert ons dat  - in tegenstelling tot het beeld dat lang geschapen werd in Hollywood - dat niet elke zwarte een pooier, hoer, crimineel, drugsverslaafde, verkrachter, ... is. De impuls die Birth of a Nation  (D.W. Griffith) gaf in 1915 krijgt dus weerwerk. Met Howl (2010) schetst Roy Epstein niet het beeld van een pervert, maar eerder van een kunstenaar die onterecht veroordeeld wordt door kleinburgerlijke puriteinen après la lettre. Ook wij belgen hebben onze bijdrage geleverd aan de geschiedenis van jazzy soundtracks. In 2011 ging The Artist (Michel Hazanvicius, 2011) in de zalen en Ludovic Bource's score werd opgenomen door het Brussels Philharmonic. Het personage George Valentin (gespeeld door Jean Dujardin) mag dan koppig en verwaand zijn en zijn zorgen verdrinken ... maar het is geen verslaafde, ook geen hoer, en ook geen crimineel. 

Een jaar vol filmmuziek!
